Historical background

Academic programme in Guidance and Counselling started as a part of the Department of Educational Guidance and Management in 1976, the year the University of Ilorin commenced her academic programmes. When the University of Ilorin, produced its first graduates in 1979, 13 of the graduands were those with specialisation in Guidance and Counselling. Since then, graduands have been produced annually with B.Ed. degrees in Guidance and Counselling.

As a result of greater demand and expansion, during the 1981/82 academic session, the Senate of the University of Ilorin, on the recommendation of the Faculty of Education, created a full-fledged Department of Guidance and Counselling. The University of Ilorin then became, at that time, the second University in Nigeria to have a full-fledged Department of Guidance and Counselling, the first one being the University of Ibadan.

In the 1980/81 academic session, Senate gave approval for the commencement of M.Ed. courses in Guidance and Counselling. Since then, the Department’s graduate programme has steadily grown in strength. The Department registered its first set of M.Phil/Ph.D. students (4 of them) in the 1984/85 academic session. The academic programmes of the Department at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels have remained second to none in the entire country in terms of the richness of their contents, their contributions to the development of general education and in their relevance for meeting the manpower requirements for Counsellors in Nigeria. It is noteworthy to state that many Doctoral graduates of the Department are now members of our staff.  The Department of Guidance and Counselling had been headed by:
